About this Unit

Through the activities of lectures, tutorials and practical laboratories, you will study introductory Statics, Dynamics and Fluid Mechanics. Statics considers bodies in equilibrium and this requires the application of Newton's Laws along with the understanding and manipulation of vector quantities: forces, equilibrium and couples. Free-body diagrams are applied to the analysis of simple trusses and internal actions within beams. Internal axial stress and strain are studied in relation to Hooke’s Law and material properties. The principle of compatibility is applied to statically indeterminate problems. The properties of area required for beam bending analysis are covered. Dynamics is addressed via kinematics and kinetics of particles and rigid bodies but limited to two-dimensions. Rectilinear, curvilinear and relative motion are described in x-y and n-t coordinates. Newton's second law is applied directly and also via work-energy principles and impulse-momentum principles. Kinetics of rigid bodies and rotation about a fixed axis are studied. Fluid mechanics commences with fluid statics, hydrostatic pressure and fluid forces on simple structures. Fluid dynamics is studied via Bernoulli’s equation and momentum flux. This unit is designed for those students who have passed WACE Mathematics Methods or equivalent.
