About this Unit

To achieve sustainable energy supply, it is essential to utilize solutions such as geothermal energy, underground energy storage, onshore and offshore wind, solar farms, geologic energy/carbon storage, hydroelectricity, and nuclear energy. However, designing, installing, and maintaining such facilities requires knowledge of the behavior of solid materials in different environments, including composite materials. This course aims to provide students with a understanding of this subject. Specifically, students will learn about stress, strength, and failure in solids, as well as how different types of stress and strain affect solid behavior. They will also gain insight into solid mechanical strength parameters, the various types of failure, and how cyclic loading and temperature fluctuations impact solid mechanical behavior. Additionally, this course covers the analysis of stresses and strains for plane stress problems, fluid statics, hydrostatic pressure, pore pressure, and Mohr's circle. Finally, students will learn about basic stress analysis of beams and how to design pressure vessels. By the end of this course, students will have a thorough understanding of the various factors that influence the mechanical aspect of the design and maintenance of facilities that contribute to meet sustainable energy supply. Students will conduct laboratory experiments to reinforce their theoretical understanding of various concepts. The learning outcome of this unit will meet United Nations SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), and SDG 13 (Climate Action).
