Privacy Policy

Last updated: 2 August 2026

This policy explains what personal information Curtin Honestly collects, why, and what you can do about it. We handle personal information in line with the Australian Privacy Principles under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).

Curtin Honestly is an independent student platform. It is not affiliated with Curtin University, and we do not share your information with the University.

What we collect

We never ask for your name, and we do not store one. There is no name field on an account.

When you create an account, we store:

  • your email address;
  • a hashed version of your password (we never store the password itself);
  • whether your student email address has been verified;
  • the date your account was created;
  • a referral code, if you signed up through a campaign link.

When you post, we store the content and its metadata:

  • reviews: rating, workload, whether there was an exam, whether you would take the unit again, optional final grade, optional semester and teaching staff name, optional written comment, and any experience tags;
  • tips and unit requests you submit;
  • which reviews you have marked as helpful, and any reviews you report;
  • the date each item was created.

What "anonymous" means here

Your name and email are never shown next to a review. Other students see only whether the reviewer is a verified student.

Reviews are still linked to your account in our database. That link is what lets you edit and delete your own reviews, stops the same account reviewing a unit twice, and lets us investigate reports of abuse. Site administrators can see which account wrote a review.

Be aware that the content of a review can identify you even without your name attached, for example if you mention a small class, a specific project, or your exact grade.

Why we collect it

  • To run your account and let you sign in.
  • To publish reviews and calculate unit ratings.
  • To send you account emails: confirming your student email address, and resetting your password.
  • To enforce our terms, moderate reported content, and prevent abuse.
  • To administer prize draws where you have chosen to take part.

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use it for advertising. Aggregated statistics, described below, are not personal information and this does not cover them.

Aggregated information

We combine reviews into statistics: unit ratings, average workload and grades, would-take-again percentages, grade distributions, and tag counts. We may publish, share, or licence those statistics to third parties, including commercially.

Aggregated statistics do not identify you and cannot be traced back to your account. Because they are no longer personal information, we may keep using them after your account is closed.

Cookies and tracking

We use Google Analytics to understand how the site is used, such as which pages are visited and how people arrive. It sets its own cookies in your browser, named _ga and _ga_ followed by an identifier, and sends usage data to Google, which processes it outside Australia. We do not use it for advertising or ad personalisation, and we do not run advertising cookies.

We also store a small amount of data in your browser ourselves:

  • your sign-in token, so you stay logged in;
  • a campaign referral or promo code, if you arrived through a campaign link, until you register;
  • whether you have dismissed the end-of-semester review prompt, for the current browser session.

Clearing your browser storage removes all of these and signs you out.

Who else can see it

We share personal information only with the services needed to run the site:

  • our hosting and database providers, which store the site's data;
  • our email provider, which delivers verification and password reset emails;
  • Google Analytics, which receives site usage data.

We may also disclose information where we are required to by law, or where it is necessary to investigate a serious safety concern.

The site is hosted in Australia. Some providers may process data overseas as part of delivering their service.

How long we keep it

  • Account details are kept while your account is open.
  • Email verification and password reset links expire shortly after they are issued and are not reusable.
  • When you close your account, your account record is deleted. By default your reviews remain published with the link to your account severed, so they can no longer be traced back to you. You can instead choose to delete your reviews at the same time.

Security

Passwords are stored hashed, traffic is encrypted in transit, and access to the database is restricted. No system is completely secure, so please use a password you do not reuse elsewhere.

Your rights

You can:

  • see and update your email address from your account page;
  • edit or delete any review you have written;
  • close your account, and choose whether your reviews go with it;
  • ask us for a copy of the personal information we hold about you;
  • ask us to correct information that is wrong.

If you are unhappy with how we have handled your information, you can complain to us at the address below. If you are not satisfied with our response, you can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy. The date at the top shows when it last changed, and where changes are significant we will make a reasonable effort to notify registered users.
