About this Unit

This unit examines methods of calculating stresses and strains in materials under a range of different loading conditions. Geometric and material properties are examined and utilised to calculate normal and shear stresses and strains due to applied axial, bending, shear and torsion actions. The basic relationships between normal stress and strain are expanded upon with investigation into general beam equations and general strain equations, enabling the solution of problems involving compatibility, composite beams, unsymmetrical bending, plastic behaviour of beams and combined actions. Techniques to determine shear stresses and strains due to shear forces and torsion actions in circular and non-circular sections are introduced. Biaxial Stress systems, and the combination of normal and shear stresses, are analysed using Mohr’s circle and stress transformation methods.
