About this Unit

The objective of this unit is to learn the basic concepts of thermodynamics and apply them to relevant mechanical engineering situations. Initially, students will learn the fundamental concepts of thermodynamic systems and control volumes to analyse closed and open systems. This will be followed by the derivation of mathematical relations for various thermodynamic properties of pure substances and ideal gases. Analysis of the interactions between work and heat flow leads into the First Law of Thermodynamics, considered for both closed systems (non-flow energy equation) and open systems (steady flow energy equation). Finally, students will be introduced to the Second Law of Thermodynamics using the concepts of heat engines and heat pumps, considering reversibility and irreversibility of processes, the Clausius Inequality, entropy and measure of irreversibility.
