About this Unit

Electromechanical Energy Systems considers multiple aspects of energy transformation and distribution, mainly focusing on mechanical engineering-related aspects of electrical systems. From an electricity generation perspective, systems incorporating steam, hydraulic and gas turbines will be examined, using thermal input from solar energy or combustion with associated emissions controls, and cooling through psychrometric processes. Other forms of generation including nuclear energy, fuel cells, solar PV, wind, wave and geothermal energy will also be briefly considered, along with energy storage including batteries, pumped hydropower, and thermal storage. Electrical fundamentals include circuits and single phase, three phase transformers and auto transformers, equivalent circuits, phasor diagrams, testing, and parallel operation. Principle of operation characteristics and control of DC, single phase and three phase induction machines and synchronous machines will be presented, with applications to mechanical plant. There will also be an introduction to induction motors, stepper motors, brushless DC machines, and permanent magnetic machines, with an overall focus on energy efficiency.
