About this Unit

Machine Dynamics focuses on the fundamental concepts and mathematics of simple dynamics, with some supporting mathematics and common applications. Coordinate systems (with repeated integrals) and vector functions are introduced in the context of relative motion, velocity and acceleration diagrams, in order to analyse planar kinematics of rigid bodies, and rotating and reciprocating components. Newton's Second Law and free body diagrams introduce the link between kinetics and kinematics, along with static and dynamic friction, inclined plane motion, and rigid body motion with applied forces and torques. Mass moments of inertia are calculated for simple and complex bodies using parallel and perpendicular axis theorems. These concepts are applied to simple mechanical power transfer systems including gears (fixed axis and epicyclic) and belt drives (flat and Vee belts). Some applications of first and second order differential equations are introduced.
