About this Unit

This unit introduces the topic of natural and forced vibration in single and multi-degree of freedom systems. Students will be taught how to simplify a variety of linear and torsional systems into mass-spring-damper systems with different force excitations. These systems will include torsional systems with varying cross sections, stiffness, and multiple rotors, as well as beams vibrating transversely with concentrated and distributed masses. Students will then learn how to create and solve these systems' differential equations. Concepts in math, such as Fourier Series, Laplace Transform, and Linear Systems of ordinary differential equations, will be taught to aid in solving the differential equations. The concept of damping and how it affects the system will be introduced. Since systems that are analysed are often part of a larger system, or are not found in isolation from their environment, concepts such as transmissibility, whirling, rotor balancing, and geared systems will be investigated. Instrumentation and methods of measuring and analysing the vibration of these systems will be introduced.
