About this Unit

The objective of this unit is to learn the fundamentals of thermodynamics with the 1st and 2nd Laws, and apply them to relevant engineering situations. Non-ideality of gases and liquids is introduced via the compressibility factor, residual, and excess properties. The broader framework of solution thermodynamics, including phase equilibrium, focuses on vapour-liquid equilibrium and reaction equilibria. Maxwell's relations are used to derive property relations. Students also learn about heat engines for the production of power from heat, as well as refrigeration and liquefaction cycles. Finally, the thermodynamics of fuel cells are introduced.
