About this Unit

This unit is an introduction to the principles of explosive engineering, drill and blast design in surface and underground mining operations, including the application of machine mining for rock breakage and autonomous and remote operation drills. The unit examines the links between the rock breakage function and downstream mineral processing and waste management functions. It also emphasises the safety aspects of explosive engineering and the need to consider environmental and social impacts on local communities. Students will acquire an understanding of state-of-the-art techniques in the environmental management of mine sites as well as be able to identify the major issues and management strategies associated with social/community engagement concerning blasting impacts.
