About this Unit

This unit introduces several fundamental mechanical engineering topics. Students will be taught how to calculate the Centroid and Second Moments of Area for composite areas, and how to determine stresses in straight beams by using Shear Force and Bending Moments Diagrams. Load Analysis will be covered, including free-body diagrams, beam loading and impact. Failure Theories for static condition in ductile materials will be introduced, including Mohr’s theory. These topics will then be applied to machine elements, such as threads and power screws. Furthermore, students will study the different types of machine joints such as bolts (non-permanent), rivets and welding (permanent). To conclude motion control clutches and brakes will be investigated.
