About this Unit

The first part of this unit will introduce the concept of metal fatigue using industry examples and explain underlying reasons for the phenomenon. Following this, metal fatigue will be analysed for the following situations: (i) ideal specimens, (ii) non-ideal specimens without a stress raiser, (iii) non-ideal specimens with a stress raiser, (iv) complex loading spectra, (v) superposition of mean and alternating stresses, (vi) superposition of multiple loading types and (vii) linear elastic fracture mechanics, crack growth, stress intensity and fracture toughness. The second part of the unit will investigate energy methods for the deflection of components, Euler buckling of columns and thick cylinder theory and its applications. Rotating rings, discs and shafts will also be considered.
