About this Unit

This unit deals with the theory, procedures, data, and analysis techniques to design machine elements commonly used in mechanical systems. Students learn the modern concepts of product safely, liability, and substantiality. The unit covers the analysis and design of machine elements, such as gears, shafts, bearings, mechanical springs, and columns. Through the study of machine elements, students will develop their capacity to understand and apply advanced engineering concepts to integrate the individual elements into a system. Students will also learn the concept of statistical analysis to assess the reliability of components.
