About this Unit

This unit introduces the fundamental properties of fluids and characteristics of fluid motion. It establishes basic concepts, such as Bernoulli equation and the control-volume analysis applied to mass conservation and momentum equation to characterise flow systems theoretically and experimentally and evaluate flow properties and fluid forces on solid bodies. It introduces models and techniques to analyse internal and external flows for the laminar and turbulent regimes and develop an understanding of the operation of fluid systems. Students will draw on their fundamental knowledge of fluid mechanics to perform design calculations for engineering applications such as dams, turbines and propellers, flow around structures, piping systems and pumps.
