About this Unit

This unit introduces key concepts of hydrogeology and the importance of groundwater and the role geology plays in understanding, appraising and managing the valuable and hidden resource. It is thus very relevant to United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6 on clean water and sanitation. The unit will focus on the hydrologic cycle, recharge-discharge phenomena, groundwater-surface water interactions, aquifer types and their characteristics, groundwater flow, aquifer tests, groundwater classification, groundwater systems, and hydrogeology in mining. A second focus is in Engineering geology and (a) Engineering classification of rocks and soils, elementary rock and soil mechanics and rocks and soil as construction materials, and (b) Engineering geology of dams, reservoirs, tailings dams, and foundations for buildings. This part embeds SDG9 in terms of building resilient infrastructure.
