About this Unit

The aim of this unit is to familiarise students with mineral processing in order to converse with industry as chemical engineers. Students will be introduced to the formation and occurrence of economically important minerals, making the distinction between separation efficiency and economic efficiency. Representative solid sampling and particle size distribution will be investigated. Students will learn about various ore dressing operations such as comminution, sizing and sorting, jigging, tabling, flotation, and magnetic and electrostatic separations. Typical problem-solving related to solids balancing and size separation in grinding circuits will be presented. A group project involving evaluation of various separation processes for beneficiation of minerals, such as electrolysis, electrowinning, leaching, solvent extraction, precipitation and by reaction, will be undertaken. The application of gas-sold reaction models in pyro-metallurgical extraction (roasting) will be examined. Typical examples from the local mineral processing industry will be presented throughout the unit.
