About this Unit

This unit introduces students to one of the most fundamental, useful and important tools that chemical and process engineers use: material and energy balances. They help us understand, analyse, design, troubleshoot and optimise industrial processes that involve physical changes and chemical transformations. Students are taken through the following topics: Introductory Concepts (dimensions, systems of units, basis of calculations, moles and concentrations); Material Balances without Reaction; Flow Diagrams; Material Balances involving Reactions; Material Balance for Combustion Systems; Multi-unit Systems (including recycle, bypass and purge); Industrial Applications; Material Balances involving Ideal Gases; Multiphase Equilibrium; Energy Balances (terminology and types of energy); Energy Balances without Reaction; Energy Balances accounting for Chemical Reaction (heat of formation, heat of reaction, sensible and latent heats, heat of combustion); Combined Material and Energy Balances. The unit provides an insight into the way chemical engineers approach problems and supplies concepts that underlie many other study units in the curriculum.
