About this Unit

In this unit, you will learn how engineering projects are evaluated, across the life-cycle, using the principles of economics, management, and sustainability by all practicing engineers. Regardless of the discipline of engineering, the core principles learned in this unit will allow you to plan, develop and manage the execution of projects and learn how to deal with risks and uncertainties inherent in managing them. You will learn how to economically ascertain the challenges and associated opportunities in sustainable practices, and how to analyse the impacts of proposed actions through the lens of economics. You will learn how a business may be optimally structured at start-up from both a management and an equity structure standpoint, and how this structure may change over time necessitated by external funding mechanisms including sourcing equity and debt, as well as due to management requirements. You will gain insights into what is involved in being an entrepreneur starting your own business and also as a manager of an existing, established business, both listed and unlisted. Over the duration of the unit, you will start developing a business case for a project or a start-up from week 2. Every week you will provide an update based on principles taught in the previous week. Collectively over 12 weeks, you will have developed a sound business proposal/plan, fully supported with defendable economic imperatives, which you will pitch to potential stakeholders for investment (or non-investment)
