About this Unit

This unit applies engineering principles to biological systems and emphasizes the integration of biology and chemical engineering. Important biological concepts most relevant to bioprocessing are introduced. These include enzymes, cell growth and metabolic pathways. The basic concepts and kinetics of enzymes, enzyme inhibition and immobilization will be examined. Engineering principles are applied to bioprocesses for the purpose of selection, design, scale up, control, and operation of bioreactors as well as downstream processing; that is, the separation and purification of the bio- products.
