About this Unit

This unit introduces students to energy storage forms and systems and provides a broad understanding and appreciation of the scientific principles that underpin the operation of such systems. The emphasis is on energy storage in the form of electron, gas, liquids and solids at different scales. This unit introduces energy storage for power systems, overview of energy storage technologies, e.g., thermal, mechanical, chemical, electrochemical efficiency of energy storage systems. This unit highlights the storage for renewable energy systems in a sustainable manner, e.g., solar energy, wind energy, pumped hydro energy, fuel cells, energy storage in micro-grid and smart grid, and scalable and large-scale energy storage of hydrogen energy. Smaller energy storage systems are also discussed for benchmarking and comparison, with consideration for the opportunities and impacts on First Nations people.. Topics covered include electrical, chemical, thermal, mechanical, electrochemical, thermochemical and thermomechanical energy storage systems as well as grid integration issues.
