About this Unit

This unit introduces students to the practice of process safety and risk management as it is performed in the engineering sectors of process industries. Fundamental hazards, process risk and safety concepts, and systematic risk assessment methods are discussed. Historical accident scenarios are reviewed to help students gain an appreciation for the complexities involved in understanding, managing and mitigating risks in the process industries. Students need to apply different measures, i.e., qualitative, semi-quantitative, and quantitative techniques, to process hazard and risk, as well as risks related to renewable energy, environmental management and sustainability. Risk management across the life cycle of a process system is explored, in conjunction with inherently safer design principles, risk assessments and mitigations. Key methods around hazard identification, consequence modelling and likelihood estimation, as precursors for estimating risk, are thoroughly examined as a central part of process safety and risk management practice. Emerging process risk management in high-pressure gas/liquid storage, renewable energy applications, sustainability, etc., are covered in this unit. Broader issues around process safety management systems, human factors, complex systems, pressure vessels, resilience engineering and regulatory matters are also considered.
