About this Unit

The Chemical Engineering Design Project is the capstone unit of the course - it relies on, reinforces and applies many of the principles and techniques learnt in previous units. In the first part of the semester, students work in groups to research and perform a realistic, open-ended chemical plant design study at the flow-sheet level. This involves performing a market survey; identifying, evaluating and selecting suitable process technologies; adapting or synthesising a process flowsheet; assessing and choosing a site location; generating and optimising mass and energy balances for the process flowsheet; performing preliminary equipment and piping design; developing a plant-wide process control philosophy with consideration of plant start-up and shutdown; initial evaluation and mitigation of safety and environmental impacts; creating a plant layout and plot plan; estimating capital and operating costs, and making a preliminary assessment of economic feasibility with scenario and sensitivity analyses. In the second part of the semester, students work individually to conduct detailed design studies on two equipment systems in their plant, covering process, operational and mechanical design aspects, including a critical review of their final designs.
