About this Unit

This unit covers methods used for the numerical solution and analysis of process flowsheets. After an introduction to process engineering software and revision of flowsheet concepts, the topics discussed include the numerical solution of algebraic and ordinary differential equations; spreadsheet functions for data analysis and optimisation; flowsheet tear analysis; introductory process simulation using Excel/VBA (Visual Basic for Applications). Process flowsheets are also solved using a commercial process simulator, such as Aspen Hysys. Students cover the selection of species, thermodynamic property package and unit models; techniques for successful process simulation; conducting sensitivity studies and optimisation; and dealing with uncertain information. Students will be introduced to the fundamentals and scope of data analytics, and gain skills in interpreting large data sets and building performance dashboards for engineering processes. The unit emphasises the need to set out simulations and analyses clearly, justify the approach taken and evaluate the computed results. Students develop teamwork and communication skills in the context of solving and analysing process flowsheets.
