About this Unit

This unit covers Piping and Instrumentation Diagram, as well as the theory and practice of the automatic control of process systems. Students are introduced to the terminology, basic components, configurations, and engineering representations of process control loops and control system synthesis. The mathematical modelling of chemical processes for control purposes is then examined using both first principles and data driven approaches. The models are represented in the frequency domain through Laplace transforms. Different types of typical dynamic process behaviour are subsequently explored: first order, second order andsimilar. This is followed by the design of single-loop feedback control systems for Proportional, Proportional Integral and Proportional Integral Derivative controller types. Control loop design includes techniques for controller tuning and for stability analysis using root locus and Bode diagrams. The unit has a laboratory component in which students conduct experiments on process control rigs to help link theory with practice.
