About this Unit

A review of the basic principles of mineralogy, including crystal systems and physical properties. Introduction to crystal chemistry and the concept of unit cells. Solid solution in minerals. A survey of the composition and structure of the common ore minerals - native metals, oxides and sulphides. Analytical methods for ore minerals, including x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron microbe and SIMS (Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy). A review of the mineralogy and textures of the commpn ore deposit types, with special emphasis on how the mineralogy and textures impact on ore processing.
