About this Unit

Minerals and metals play a key role in the transition to a significantly lower carbon future. The move to a low carbon economy and net zero emission, based on renewable energy, low carbon electricity generation and energy-efficient technologies, will shift and transform the landscape of how we extract, process, and produce metals. This unit introduces the concept of low carbon society and circular economy in relation to metals processing and production. Strategies and emerging technologies, such as technospheric mining, urban mining and recycling, green metal processing, and green chemistry will be studied. Full flowsheet and value chain perspectives and life cycle assessment (LCA) will be covered to provide context for these concepts and to identify how these approaches improve resource utilisation, environmental impact, and future metal supply.
