About this Unit

This unit gives a brief introduction to many aspects of mechanical design. Topics include load analysis, equilibrium and free body diagrams, deflection and stiffness, energy absorption, three dimensional stress and combined stresses, and Mohr’s circle representation. Stress concentration factors and residual stresses are also considered, along with column buckling, impact loading, failure theories and introduction to fatigue failure. Finally, students will be introduced to the concept of safety factors, and a brief analysis of threaded fasteners and power screws, and design of welded joints subjected to static loading.
