About this Unit

In this applied research and biostatistics unit, students will learn ethical application of mixed research methodologies. You will learn to critically evaluate scientific evidence provided by the scientific community alongside evidence created elsewhere, such as Artificial Intelligence. Working in groups to review scientific evidence and apply ethical considerations and statistical reasoning, you will identify research gaps and design a research proposal that assesses research hypotheses related to an area of the United Nation Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDG), such as food produce, improved nutrition, sustainable food consumption (UN SDG2); mental health, accidents prevention, tobacco control (UN SDG3); low carbon, sustainable energy use (UN SDG7); and food waste, electric vehicles, recycling, reduce waste generation/wasteful consumption (UN SDG12). You will learn to prepare UN SDG-related data in an appropriate format to suit the requirement of certain statistical packages and test the proposed quantitative research questions using appropriate techniques, such as regression models. Finally, you will practise interpreting and communicating your findings that provides answer(s) to progressing the UN SDG.
