About this Unit

In this subject you continue to treat patients in a variety of clinical settings. You will work with people who experience different complexities of oral disease. You will manage patients with special care needs and complex medical histories. The placements in this unit will prepare you for independent practice as a newly qualified oral health therapist. You will explore your potential role as oral health therapist and apply your full scope of practice within the current regulation. An important part of your responsibility when providing independent oral health therapy care is knowing how to prepare referrals to other dental/health practitioners. You will familiarise yourself with how to treat patients from a holistic point of view and to consider the systemic-oral health link. In clinical discussions you prepare yourself for independent care planning. You continue to reflect on your behaviour and explore cultural bias, to make sure you offer the best care to all your patients. You improve your time management in clinic, offering quality care whilst being efficient. You will constantly analyse your skills and knowledge and display a life-long learning attitude. You will collect further evidence that you have met all the Australian Dental Council descriptors for the newly qualified oral health therapist.
