About this Unit

In this unit you will gain pharmacological knowledge relevant to the clinical management of adults and children. You will learn the importance of pharmacology in patient treatment; and how to recognise side effects, medication interactions and the importance of understanding the limitations of medications. You will also study the science behind anti-microbial mouthwashes, toothpaste ingredients and other over the counter therapeutic goods. Oral health therapists should be able to recognise different oral pathologies, so this unit will describe different oral pathologies and the possible causes and explain the role of the oral health therapist in clinical management. You will also explore different clinical manifestations in problem-based learning tasks and be introduced to the specialty of oral medicine. The specialty of oral medicine is concerned with the oral health care of patients with medically related disorders of the oral and maxillofacial region. You learn how to interpret certain clinical characteristics (within your scope of practice) and prepare professional referrals.
