About this Unit

In this subject you will be introduced to the theory and practical foundation for oral health therapy. You are introduced to the roles and responsibilities of the members of the dental team and their individual scope of practice. You will learn how to distinguish oral health from oral disease, and how to support people to achieve (and maintain) good oral health. You gain insight in preventive oral health care strategies, the importance of behavioural change management and minimally invasive dentistry procedures. You learn the theory underpinning the clinical decision-making process. An introduction to oral health promotion and the social determinants of health enables you to understand the factors that affect (oral) health behaviour, the importance for equal access to preventive oral health care and your role in improving oral health literacy. You will be trained in performing non-surgical periodontal instrumentation and restorative dentistry on a manikin. You will be introduced to infection control and how to take dental radiographs. An important part of this unit is applying the different skills in a variety of simulated settings, through case studies, peer-discussions, and student-on-student practical sessions, under the supervision of experienced educational facilitators.
