About this Unit

In this unit you will treat patients in a variety of clinical settings. You are introduced to how to offer clinical oral health care to people from different age groups and apply your acquired oral health therapy skills in children and adults. Under the supervision of experienced clinicians, you will perform oral health risk assessments, oral examinations, care and treatment planning and you will evaluate the outcomes of your care. You learn to formulate clinical diagnoses for different oral health diseases and manage care within your scope of practice. An important part of your training will be the practical application of pain management strategies (i.e., local anaesthesia). In the simulation lab you will further develop your technical skills in advanced oral health therapy procedures and treatments. You will refine your dental radiography skills (including OPG). You apply oral health promotion theory and strategies in different situations, with different target groups and you learn different theories to manage behavioural changes. You reflect on your learning process, your ethical and professional practice, and constantly develop strategies to improve your skills or consolidate your level of competence in oral health therapy.
