About this Unit

This unit is a practical and theoretical exploration of the fundamental principles of chemistry as they apply to the biosciences, and with a focus on human systems. We will describe principles to develop your understanding of molecular-scale biological structure and apply conventions to communicate chemical structures and reactions that underpin life. We will relate chemical reactions to energy transfer as electrons and protons used to fuel biological systems. Lastly, we will categorise biomolecules on the basis of patterns in their chemical structures. Together these will provide a foundation for your future studies in biochemistry, molecular genetics, pharmaceutical science and cell biology.
