About this Unit

This unit provides students with an introduction to the core concepts in pharmaceutical sciences, delivered across three modules with theoretical and practical components.Module 1: Pharmaceutical Calculations comprises essential skills and concepts, such as unit conversions, molar equivalence, concentration, density, dilution, pH and preparation of pharmaceutical solutions, including buffers. This module includes an introduction to laboratory safety and medicinal dosage forms in clinical use.Module 2: Pharmaceutical Analysis comprises general knowledge and practical skills for the quantitative analysis of medicinal substances via titrimetric and spectrophotometric techniques. This module includes an introduction to common and important functional groups within drug molecules.Module 3: Pharmaceutical Biochemistry introduces essential biomolecules and metabolic pathways. This module also explores enzyme function and energy metabolism, and considers the pharmaceutical relevance of these biochemical processes and their role in the molecular basis of disease.
