About this Unit

This unit provides an introductory biopsychosocial approach to musculoskeletal health across the life-span. Clinically-orientated anatomy and pathology are applied in the context of individuals with common musculoskeletal disorders in first-contact primary care settings. Evidence-informed, person-centred assessment and management based on a biopsychosocial framework is developed. Information is gathered from the individual using multidimensional screening tools, medical notes / referral letters, medical imaging, observation and physical assessment procedures. Clinical assessment findings are analysed and common patterns of clinical presentation identified. Principles of clinical decision-making about selection, rationalisation and application of treatment and management are considered, focused on evidence-based high-value care to achieve an optimised return to function. Principles include patient-centred education, graded movement exposure, exercise interventions and physical activity programs, manual therapy, facilitating healthy lifestyle behaviours and appropriate referral to other health care practitioners. Effective person-centred verbal and interprofessional digital communication skills are developed in a musculoskeletal context.
