About this Unit

This unit involves understanding pain experiences across the lifespan, across all practice specialties, and inter-professional healthcare settings. Contemporary, evidence-informed knowledge about the multidimensional and individual variability of factors that contribute to each person’s pain experience will be developed. Clinical vignettes of acute and persistent pain will be used to strengthen knowledge transfer, to help make sense of pain. Clinical assessment will be developed in a pain disorders context, further developing empathetic person-centred communication and use of validated screening tools contextualised to contemporary biopsychosocial frameworks. Care planning will focus on skills to interpret the unique biological, psychological, social, and cultural factors that can influence each individual’s pain experience and translation of this understanding into supported self-management. Shared decision-making will form a fundamental principle to guide holistic, ethical, culturally-appropriate high-value care.
