About this Unit

This unit applies foundational pathophysiology and anatomy knowledge, communication, professional and manual handling skills to individuals presenting in an acute care clinical setting. Concepts of medical stability, post-operative protocols, and risk management are included within the context of acute trauma, gerontology, medical and surgical patients. There is a focus on person-centred management, guided by accurate assessment processes, including gathering and documenting accurate information from the patient, medical notes, charts, investigations (including X-Rays), and simple physical or physiological testing. Principles of acute care, including positioning, mobilisation with attachments, transfers, walking aids, selection and prescription of early rehab exercises, and engagement of the patient in the recovery process are considered and practiced. Common discharge issues are considered.
