About this Unit

This unit explores the foundational principles related to the safe assessment, prescription and monitoring of exercise and rehabilitation across the lifespan and in selected clinical populations. Understanding of the physiological changes offered by physical activity, including aerobic and resistance exercise, is progressed to include the evidence-based effects of exercise on clinical populations. The basic principles related to implementing aerobic, strength and conditioning, motor control and range of movement exercise are applied to clinical case examples in the areas of musculoskeletal, cardiopulmonary, neurological and other physiotherapy settings. Factors that influence implementation success will be considered, including shared decision-making and motivational factors, biomechanical and physiological factors, desired functional goals and accessibility to resources needed for exercise. Students will develop their skills in shared decision-making with clients and effective verbal and digital communication with fellow health professionals working within a range of rehabilitation contexts.
