About this Unit

In this unit, students will explore theories and models of clinical decision-making and their relevance in the paramedic setting. Cognitive bias and its impact on patient safety will be explored. Frameworks to guide clinical decision-making will be introduced, and their efficacy will be evaluated. The role of social and economic factors, safety netting and patient values will also be explored in clinical decision-making. Effective communication, including verbal and written communication, as influences on bias and patient safety throughout the patient journey will also be explored. Finally, students will consider non-medical factors and available referral pathways to develop management plans for acute patients of all acuity types.
