About this Unit

Within this unit, students will apply their theoretical knowledge to assess, diagnose, plan, manage, document, and evaluate patient care across the patient's lifespan (including scene safety, patient assessment, therapeutic management and diagnostic reasoning). Linked to the other semester 4 units, students will learn to assess and manage clinical conditions within a paramedic context. Advanced life support during out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, in line with national guidelines, will be introduced. Assessment skills will be expanded with a continued focus on identifying the deteriorating patient, performing diagnostic assessments, and using clinical reasoning to inform management. Students will learn to respond to and adapt management strategies in response to rapid and fluctuating changes in patient conditions. Clinical scope will continue to be expanded with further advanced skills (including intraosseous access) and therapeutic management options. All clinical practice will be grounded in relevant paramedic ethical, legal, professional, and person-centred frameworks, with a strong emphasis on reflective practice. Students will critically evaluate their experiences to develop self-awareness, enhance decision-making, and continuously improve the quality of care they provide.
