About this Unit

This unit develops students’ understanding of professional practice—the integration of ethical behaviour, accountability, interpersonal communication, and the application of occupational therapy knowledge and frameworks in alignment with the Occupational Therapy Competency Standards. It consolidates the application of theories and concepts by drawing on occupational therapy models and frameworks, applying client- and person-centred approaches, engaging in reflective practice and clinical reasoning, and supporting the development of professional behaviours—including verbal and non-verbal communication skills identified in the Occupational Therapy Competency Standards as essential for interprofessional collaboration and safe, respectful practice. Through learning activities, students begin to apply the competency standards with a particular focus on accountability, ethical practice, and interpersonal communication. Students will undertake a one-week fieldwork placement, offering opportunities to observe and appropriately engage in professional practice within the scope of a second-year student. A reflective portfolio supports this process, enabling students to capture their growth in relation to the Occupational Therapy Competency Standards and to recognise that professional behaviours, communication, and ethical practice are skills that continue to develop throughout their studies and future practice.
