About this Unit

This unit uses a systems approach to assess, diagnose, plan, manage, document and evaluate care related to complex health needs of people. Students apply therapeutic communication and critical thinking / clinical reasoning to meet nursing competency standards in selected clinical contexts. This unit has a focus on acute mental health nursing care, contemporary mental health nursing issues and models of mental health care. Assessment and planning strategies, particularly with people in crisis (self harm). The unit also provides an introduction to critical care nursing including: integrated comprehensive physical and mental health assessment and management. Neurological assessment; advanced pain management of people in cardiac and respiratory crisis. Students continue advanced wound care; advanced medication administration: medications via central lines (CVCs/PICCs), TPN, and PCAs, including dosage calculations and applied pharmacology for Step 3 pain management, cardiac, respiratory and mental disorders. This unit includes Clinical Placement hours
