About this Unit

In this unit we introduce key concepts in public health in shaping our understanding about who is communicatively healthy and why, and the importance of prevention efforts in improving equity both globally and locally. We examine how health promotion frameworks are used in developing community-level interventions, focussing on prevention in response to an identified community need. We explore how speech pathologists can work collaboratively with communities to create authentic, inclusive supports to meet the needs of all people, including people with communication and swallowing needs. We highlight the need for systemic advocacy and change to promote local and global equity, and the role speech pathologists may play in this.
