About this Unit

In this unit, students will develop their knowledge and understanding of person- and family-centred approaches to acquired language and cognitive communication disorders, and of theoretical models of language as applied to adult language impairment. Students will critically evaluate the evidence for assessment and management of people who have acquired language and cognitive communication disorders. They will develop their skills in assessment, collaborative goal setting, therapy and management of clients. They will learn about culturally safe practice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and for clients from a range of culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. This unit supports students to develop their communication and clinical interaction skills relevant to speech pathology practice, including their ability to advocate for clients within the multidisciplinary team, and to work with families and conversation partners.
