About this Unit

This unit uses a systems approach to assess, diagnose, plan, manage, document and evaluate patient care across the lifespan, including managing unstable conditions. Students learn to assess and manage care needs of people with confusional states. Students apply therapeutic communication, critical reasoning and meet nursing competency standards in selected clinical contexts. The unit continues the development of knowledge of medication preparation, administration and recording, dosage calculations, legislative control. Content includes applied pharmacology relating to pain, nausea, complementary therapy for pain; wound management including removal of sutures/staples and drains; surgical wound management; ANTT and the use of sterile gloves; continence (bowel and bladder elimination), catheter insertion and care and bladder washouts; emesis management and end of life care. Meeting the needs of people with acute confusion and recognising the deteriorating patient and responding to MET calls (adults) in clinical contexts.
