About this Unit

This unit explores advanced, applied concepts in exercise and sports physiology relevant to healthy active individuals and athletes across the lifespan. Emphasis is placed on the physiological mechanisms underpinning training adaptation, performance, fatigue, and recovery, and how these are influenced by environmental stressors, ergogenic aids, sex differences, development and ageing. Students engage with contemporary research and applied methodologies to interpret physiological and performance data, evaluate limitations to exercise performance, and justify evidenced-based strategies for optimising training and recovery. Through integrated theoretical content and applied assessment, the unit develops advanced professional reasoning and communication skills essential for practice as an exercise scientist.
