About this Unit

This unit is the first of four bioscience units in the paramedicine curriculum, designed to deepen students' understanding of clinical theory and management principles. The bioscience units take an integrated, systems-based approach to learning, where pathophysiology, diagnostic strategies, and pharmacology are concurrently taught across the lifespan through application to real-world case studies. In this unit, students will begin with a foundations module that explores core topics such as the basics of pharmacology, haemodynamic stability, shock, inflammation, sepsis, and pain management. Following this, students will integrate biomedical knowledge with patient-centred and culturally safe care to address musculoskeletal, integumentary, and neurological conditions commonly managed by paramedics. Emphasis is placed on discussing the aetiology, pathophysiology, and clinical manifestations of conditions commonly managed by paramedics, interpreting diagnostic strategies, and understanding pharmacotherapeutics and quality use of medicines. Students will also develop skills in evaluating and applying primary evidence and clinical standards to inform management strategies that are evidence-based, person-centred, and culturally safe.
