About this Unit

This unit will first give an overview of energy transition and the role of renewable energy in addressing environmental impacts by the use of fossil fuels. The unit will cover in detail three renewable energy types most commonly used. i.e. solar, wind and hydro. Under the topic of solar power, calculation of sun’s position angles and solar radiation components are introduced. Furthermore, it will focus on solar PV cells, modules and arrays and their electrical characteristics. Under the topic of wind power, the students will learn the fundamentals of wind resource, types of turbines and their control, wind speed assessment, types of generators and control methods in grid-connected application. The sections covered under hydro power are the calculation of power in water, types of hydro power plants, types of turbines, generators and their control methods in grid-connected application. The last topic covered in this unit is on the emerging alternative energy source of hydrogen. The fundamentals of energy conversion in fuel cells, the types of fuel cells, methods of generating hydrogen, non-idealities of fuel cells, power conditioning needs are all discussed under this topic.
