About this Unit

This unit is about the modelling of process systems for purposes such as design, control, optimisation and insight. It introduces a systematic approach to model building, from conceptualising the problem to be solved through to producing a validated, fit-for-purpose modelling solution. It covers the classification of process variables and the development of conservation equations and their supporting constitutive relations needed to produce both steady state and dynamic models for both lumped- and distributed-parameter systems. Numerical solutions methods for the developed models are taught, along with the essential associated topics of model verification, calibration and validation.
