About this Unit

The concept of elasticity in 2D and 3D continua will be introduced with particular focus on plane stress and plane strain problems. Finite element (FE) method will be introduced with particular focus on the formulation of stiffness matrix equations for bar, truss, beam and plate elements. Shape functions will also be introduced in the formation of FE stiffness equations. The use of commercial FE software to model and analyse different structural problems will also be covered. Non-linear FE analysis techniques will also be introduced in this unit. The theory of buckling analysis of plates and frames will also be covered. Basic principles and industry practices for the analysis and design of bulk material handling support systems used in the mining sector provide an industry context for modelling.
